On 12th May, 2026, the School Disaster Focal conducted a Disaster Awareness Programme for students to educate them on safety measures and emergency preparedness during natural disasters and other emergencies. The awareness session focused on important safety practices during earthquakes, fires, floods, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and windstorms. Students were guided on how to remain calm, respond responsibly, and follow safety procedures during emergencies. The programme also emphasized the importance of preparedness, discipline, teamwork, and helping others during crisis situations. Through the awareness session, students gained valuable knowledge and practical understanding on protecting themselves and staying safe both in school and in the community.
1. Windstorm / Strong Wind
During strong winds or windstorms, students should remain indoors and stay away from windows for safety. Avoid standing under trees, electric poles, or loose structures that may fall. Always remain calm and carefully follow the instructions given by teachers and school authorities.
2. Fire Safety
In case of a fire, students should not panic or run. If smoke or fire is noticed, raise the alarm immediately and inform teachers about any electrical problems or exposed wiring. Use emergency exits in an orderly manner and never play with matches or electrical appliances. After evacuation, gather safely at the designated assembly area.
3. Flood Safety
During floods, students should move quickly to higher and safer places. Avoid going near rivers, drains, or fast-moving water, as they can be dangerous. Never walk, swim, or play in flood water because it may cause injuries or accidents.
4. Earthquake Safety
During an earthquake, students should remember to “Drop, Cover, and Hold” until the shaking stops. Stay away from windows, shelves, and heavy objects that may fall. Do not rush toward exits during the shaking. Once it is safe, evacuate calmly and gather at the assembly ground.
5. Heavy Rain Safety
On rainy days, students should carry umbrellas or raincoats for protection. Avoid playing in muddy, slippery, or flooded areas to prevent accidents and injuries. Stay away from rivers, drains, and flooded paths, and always follow school safety instructions during heavy rain.
6. Thunderstorm Safety
During thunderstorms, students should stay indoors and avoid standing under tall trees or near electric poles. Do not use electrical appliances unnecessarily and stay away from open fields or metal objects. If thunder is heard, move immediately to a safe shelter.
General Safety Reminders
Students should always remain calm during emergencies and listen carefully to teachers and announcements. Helping younger students and cooperating with others can make everyone safer. Never spread rumors or create panic, as safety awareness and preparedness help save lives.
